Police arrested Darryl Eugene Patterson, 19, who is suspected of shooting the victim. Two others were detained, but later released.

The victim and his wife were near Macy's in the 3800 block of South Cooper Street when he  got into an argument with Patterson. The victim was approached later in the parking garage stairwell by three men, including Patterson, Cook said.

The victim was shot two or three times, Cook said. Police don't believe the victim knew the shooter and it's unclear what the argument was about.

The three men fled the scene and ran across the street, Cook said. The owner of nearby Car Toys told police he saw one of the men unsuccessfully attempt to throw a gun on the building's roof.

Patterson faces two aggravated assault charges -- one for the actual shooting and one because the victim's wife said the gun was also pointed at her, Cook said.

The driver is not facing any charges.
